Conservation is at the heart of Gaffney & Cullivan’s architectural practice. With accredited conservation expertise, the practice works with historic and protected structures to understand their original character, retain significant architectural fabric and introduce carefully considered new uses. Their approach is centred on adaptive reuse — finding new purposes for existing buildings rather than allowing important structures to fall into disrepair.
The practice has worked extensively with the OPW and various local authorities, including projects at Castletown House, historic healthcare buildings and former courthouses. More recent work includes the adaptation of the former courthouses in Belturbet, Dowra and Ballyjamesduff, a connected group of early 20th-century Neoclassical buildings.
The Castleblayney Library project is another excellent example of this approach, transforming a damaged historic gate lodge into a vibrant public facility. The building had suffered significant fire and water damage, making its restoration particularly challenging.
